From the family collection of Jim Thorpe's son come these scarce and limited edition U.S. Mint issued commemorative medals (14). The obverse depicts a head shot of Thorpe with the Olympic rings to his left and a pole vault bar to his right. Below are his dates of birth and death. The type around the perimeter reads "Immortal Athlete, Proud Indian, Great American, James Francis Thorpe." The reverse reads "Recognizing Excellence in Athletics, Jim Thorpe Commission." Two of the medals are 3" in diameter and weigh 12 ounces. They are limited edition and numbered on the side and still sealed in the U.S. Mint issued bags. There are also six silver medals at 1 1/2" diameter and six bronze. Eight of these are still sealed in the original Mint issued and sealed transparent plastic holders and grade uncirculated. All of the medals bear the "P" of the Philadelphia mint. These come with a Thorpe family letter.
