Rare June 13-14-15, 1933, Jim Thorpe Pin
Jim Thorpe was an amazing, enormously versatile athlete who achieved immense fame as a college and professional football player, the winner of the traditional pentathlon and the decathlon in the 1912 Olympics, and a Major League baseball player. Presented is a rare June 13-14-15, 1933, Jim Thorpe souvenir pin. Thorpe played football and engaged in track and field events for the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. Under the famed Glenn "Pop" Warner, Thorpe played at Carlisle in 1907-08 and again in 1911-12. A halfback, defensive back, placekicker, drop kicker, and punter, Thorpe was a Third Team All-American in 1908 and a First Team All-American in 1911-12. Although research results differ and do not even include two games from the 1912 season, Thorpe is credited with 25-to-27 touchdowns in 1912, and between 198-244 points that season. Thorpe led little Carlisle to the National Championship in 1912. In the 1912 Summer Olympics, in London, Thorpe was incredible. He won Gold Medals in both the classic pentathlon and in the decathlon. later, his Olympic medals were rescinded because Thorpe had played two summers of minor league baseball and was thus considered a professional athlete who should not have been eligible for the Olympics. Thorpe was also an outfielder in Major League baseball for six seasons, mostly for the New York Giants, playing for hall of Fame manager John McGraw. Thorpe had a Major League batting average of .252, although he did hit .327 in his final season, with the Boston Braves. Thorpe's versatility extended into a realm of movement that combines dance and sport. While a student at Carlisle, Thorpe, and his future wife, Iva, won a National Intercollegiate Ballroom Dancing Championship. The displayed pin has a diameter of 1.75". Attached to the pin is a charm, measuring about 2.25x1.25", that depicts a Native American in a canoe. The writing imprinted on the pin reads, "Jim Thorpe-Former Carlisle Athlete/Carlisle, PA. June 13-14-15, 1933." It seems that the pin and charm were connected to a form of celebration of Jim Thorpe in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, approximately 20 years after he completed his attendance at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. The back of the pin has part of a word obscured, but the pin's printing shows it to have been made in Newark, New Jersey. The pin shows some darkening from the passage of time, and the attached charm also shows darkening, but both the pin and the charm are in very good condition. The offering is 90 years old and makes a wonderful remembrance of one of the most amazing athletes in history.
