7 original oil-on-canvas paintings for the book Leagues Apart, by Lawrence Ritter, provides a thought provoking collection of exuberant and color-drenched artwork from renowned artist Richard Merkin. Book is a fascinating account of Negro League history (two hard-cover copies included here). Each of the seven 20x30” oil on canvas pieces depicts an awesome talent who has since become a folk hero. Andrew “Rube” Foster, Wilbur “Bullet Joe” Rogan, “Cannonball” Dick Redding, William “Judy” Johnson, Louis Santop, & Willie “Devil” Wells. The final, most unique, panting entitled, “Only The Ball Was White” has a diameter of 19”, its canvas cut into a circular shape. All are matted to 30x40” in Mint condition.
