Rickey Henderson’s 1979 Puerto Rican League Contract
Nobody knows when and where it will end, but this 6-page contract from the Ponce Leones of the Puerto Rican Winter League, dated September 18, 1979, was the icing on Rickey’s 1st big league season, letting him reel in a few extra bucks -- just as he does today in the game’s nether reaches. At the time, the 20-year-old future HOFer and all-time base-stealing king had just come off his rookie year in Oakland, hitting .274 and swiping 33 bases in 89 games. The Leones paid him a salary of $4500 a month plus a free apartment, terms Rickey eagerly accepted with his signature on the last page in bold blue marker, grading 9/10. Contract itself is EX-MT w/the mildest foxing around the edges and 2 binding holes at the top.
