Rod Carew Signed Fleer Contract
Just 18 and a long way from his eventual induction into the HOF, Carew got a big league taste by signing this July 27, 1964 contract with the Fleer bubblegum card company -- for the bush league compensation of $125 per season for a period of 5 seasons. Actually, it would take Carew 3 more seasons just to make it to the Twins, whereupon his gum card price no doubt escalated as dramatically as his career hit total of 3,053. Carew’s signature is on the back of the 1-page contract as “Rodney C. Carew”in blue pen, as graceful as he was with a bat in his hands, and grading NRMT. He wrote in his home address as 535 W. 151st St. -- just across the Harlem river from Yankee Stadium. Also signed by agent Jim Martino. 8.5 x 12.5” and EX w/light border foxing, one horizontal fold. Authenticated by PSA/DNA w/sticker on page 2 bottom). Includes a comp-ticket Twins envelope signed by Carew in black marker, signature also NRMT.
