Rogers Hornsby 1931 Game Used Bat (36")
This incredible chunk of lumber swung in anger by the greatest hitting second baseman of all time should rightly be made of knotty pine, given that Hornsby was also likely the biggest pain in the butt of all time. Constantly at loggerheads with managers and owners, and a foul-mouthed racist to boot, only "Rajah" could have won the MVP award in 1925 -- and be traded, after 12 magnificent seasons with the Cards, to the Giants (whereupon he got a $100,000 setttlement of his Cardinal stock options, with every NL team having to chip in to pay him). And for all that, even after hitting .361, he lasted only one season in New York before Muggsy McGraw sent him packing to the Braves. Result? A .387 average and another trade, to the Cubs. Only Rajah. It was during this time of Hornsby's travels and travails that he gripped this historically 36" Louisville Slugger, which has been identified as being used between 1924 and 1931, when the Cubs finally fired him as player-manager. (He played out his 23-year career with the Browns, finishing with a .358 lifetime mark.) The stick is as smooth as the man was prickly, the thin coat of shellack on its dark caramel brown surface still present. A few nicks and chips are on the barrel, and a there's a crack on the handle. Bat is around 40 ounces, a typical big boy as bats went then. Great bat with great display appeal, and one that perfectly reflects a man who was at peace with himself only when he could grip one of these things. Talk about calming the savage beast. Hornsby bats are rarely found, especally in this condition, so we wouldn't advise waiting.
