Rolling Stones First Recording Contract

Rolling Stones First Recording Contract

A prime piece of rock and roll archeology is encased in this magnificent framed display -- the first management contract signed by the Rolling Stones, with Eric Easton's Impact Sound company located on Regent Street in London. The date of the contract -- May 21, 1963 -- is an important detail for rock and Stones historians in particular, as it was the day the band begun by Brian Jones in art school had reached a level of sophistication. Negotiated by Jones and Easton, the contract is remarkably simple compared with today's phone book-sized agreements, just 4 pages. Another detail for the Stones-phile is that the address listed for the band is 102 Edith Grove in London, the flat shared by the entire band in the early, lean days. Signing the contract was urgent for Jones, as Easton was working on a deal for them with Decca Records, and the royalty distribution had to be worked out first. That split turned out to be a royalty rate of 6 percent of all sales, an amount which today would be tipping money for them. Of speical note is that Jones signed in 2 places, fully over a French postage stamp on page 4, and with his initials in the margin next to a stricken out paragraph. Easton initialed there as well, and signed fully at the end. The pages have been nicely preserved and have incurred little beyond superficial age damage. Also in the display are two vintage Stones photos under a white background cut to reveal the contract and photos. All items are in a heavy brown frame sized to 31 x 34". Just think of what this contract meant for the evolution of rock and roll. LOA.
