Seabiscuit Press Photo Collection (19)
This significant collection of 19 original press photos are dated from 1937 to 1939 and include both Seabiscuit’s thrilling racing events and the more tranquil moments around the barn. A beloved equine hero who captured the imagination and affection of the nation during the Depression, the champion was quite newsworthy as racing fans followed his victories and near misses. Racing images include: 1937 Yonkers Handicap, the 1938 Bay Meadows Handicap, 1938 Hollywood Gold Cup, 1938 Havre De Grace Handicap, and a very rare press photo from his lone race in 1939 when he was injured and taken out of training for nearly the entire year. The 1938 training and stable press photos feature Seabiscuit at Belmont Park and subsequent preparation for the famous match race against the Triple Crown Winner War Admiral. One of our favorite aspects of the press photos are the typed notes and suggested copy regularly affixed to the backside of press photos providing both information and oftentimes humor sorely missing in contemporary journalism today. An example is this witty gem: "All that Seabiscuit will see during the match race against War Admiral ... will be the course in front of him, thanks to the blinkers being adjusted here. Jockey Johnny ‘Red’ Pollard, who is up on the Biscuit here, will ride him in the great event. Admiral's admirers, however, [maintain] that Seabiscuit will also have an exclusive view of their hero's hind quarters." An incredible opportunity for any Seabiscuit enthusiast or fan of racing history.
