Seabiscuit Santa Anita Handicap Last Start Program/Magazine Gem Mint

Seabiscuit Santa Anita Handicap Last Start Program/Magazine Gem Mint

This amazing offering of an original Seabiscuit 1940 Santa Anita Handicap program and accompanying Thoroughbred Record Magazine is every bit as exceptional for its content as it is for the pristine condition of its artifacts. The offering showcases a significant and seminal moment in the career of the Depression-era Thoroughbred champion who became the subject of a No. 1 best-selling book and Hollywood film. Apart from his 1938 match race with Triple Crown winner War Admiral, Seabiscuit's most acclaimed racing performance was in his last career start in the March 7, 1940 Santa Anita Handicap.

The prestigious California race renowned at the time for its lucrative "hundred grander" purse structure was the target of the best racehorses of the day. Twice prior, in the 1937 and 1938 runnings, Seabiscuit had finished second in the race -- both times by a heartbreaking nose loss in a photo finish. Following almost an entire year off to recuperate from a ruptured suspensory ligament, Seabiscuit returned to competition as owner Charles Howard and trainer Tom Smith targeted the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap as the final race in the illustrious career of the beloved champion. Like the inspiring Hollywood script that would be written about the event 60 years later, in front of a packed crowd of 78,000, Seabiscuit, with regular jockey Red Pollard, who was returning from his own leg injury, ran into racing immortality with a 1 1/2 length victory in one of the most defining and emotional moments in sports history.

We rarely see a program of this age and era in such pristine condition, documenting such a significant horse in such a significant race. Crisp, and entirely unmarked, the condition of the program should be considered one of the finest and most important original Seabiscuit programs ever publicly offered. Complimenting this offering is the corresponding companion piece of an original March 9, 1940 edition from the esteemed and now defunct racing publication The Thoroughbred Record. The esteemed trade publication features Seabiscuit and the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap on the cover and an article providing the complete summary of the race, as well as being filled with other racing news of the day. Like the program, it too is in mint condition and should be considered a coveted collectible in its own right. An amazing offering for any racing fan or Seabiscuit enthusiast.
