Secretariat 25th Anniversary Composite Print

Secretariat 25th Anniversary Composite Print

ADDENUDM: The photo for this lot was switched with Lot 870 in the printed catalog and previously online. It is corrected now.

This large collage of Secretariat imagery comes from the personal collection of his owner Penny Chenery. The framed print enjoyed a place of prominence in her living room, and according to her family, evoked the fond memories and sense of awe she unceasingly felt for her chestnut champion. This love for Secretariat and the pride of his accomplishments was integral to her role promoting the sport, a responsibility she eagerly accepted and graciously maintained until her passing in 2017. The origin of this large piece is mysterious except that we know it was produced in 1998 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Secretariat's legendary 1973 Triple Crown accomplishments. As we have never seen another, it is possible it was a one-off sample and never offered publicly. The montage of more than 30 photos interspersed with the blue and white checked blocks representing the Meadow Stable color, is a visual timeline that tells the Secretariat story from his early days as a foal in Virginia to his retirement at Claiborne Farm, and all the glorious racing achievements in between. Measuring a generous 23" x 29.5" in total, the framed print has been officially catalogued in the Secretariat Archives and is accompanied by its own individual letter of authenticity from the Chenery/Tweedy family. A wonderful opportunity to own a piece of Secretariat's enduring legacy and keep the Big Red flame burning, just like Penny.
