Considered by many the greatest race horse of all time, Secretariat set the standard when on June 9, 1973, with the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in hand, he proceeded to win the Belmont Stakes by an unheard of 31 lengths, securing the Holy Grail of Racing, the Triple Crown. After winning $1.3 million, he retired to stud at Claiborne Farms in Kentucky. In August 1975 Claiborne Farms veterinarian Floyd C. Sager gifted Secretariat's right fore foot horseshoe to Western Kentucky University professor J. Crawford Crowe. The shoe is mounted under glass in a handsome framed display with a great illustration of the horse and a letter from Sager to Crowe.
