"Sherluck" 1961 Belmont Stakes Trophy

"Sherluck" 1961 Belmont Stakes Trophy

Three-year-old racehorse Sherluck captured the 1961 Belmont Stakes, spoiling Carry Back's dreams of taking the Triple Crown. Jockey Braulio Baeza was just 21 years old himself when he rode Sherluck to victory that day after Eddie Arcaro declined, thinking the horse had no chance in the race. He was in good company, too, as Sherluck went off at odds of 65-1, making him the longest shot ever to win the Belmont Stakes, paying over $130.00 on a $2 win ticket. Here's the actual jockey's award won by Sherluck and Baeza in shocking fashion over a half-century ago. Standing just under 7" tall, it is engraved: "NEW YORK RACING ASSOCIATION THE BELMONT BELMONT PARK 1961 WON BY JACOB SHER'S SHERLUCK JOCKEY: BRAULIO BAEZA." Surprisingly, when recent ex-President Dwight Eisenhower and wife, Mamie, made the trophy presentation to Baeza, they spoke to the young Panamanian in his native Spanish, as Eisenhower had worked on the Panama Canal before the war. A photo of Eisenhower with Baeza is included.
