Spend A Buck Baccarat Crystal 1985 Jersey Derby Trophy

Spend A Buck Baccarat Crystal 1985 Jersey Derby Trophy

Now part of racing legend, Robert Brennan offered a $2 million bonus to any horse who could win the Kentucky Derby and sweep the "Jersey Crown" and this is from the third and final race, the 1985 Jersey Derby. There are two pieces: a wood base and gorgeous Baccarat Crystal, which weighs 12 lbs, 11 oz. by itself. The crystal measures 9x10" and is engraved "Baccarat" with Baccarat France circular stamp on bottom, and the handles are stamped with the maker's logo. In all it is 10x11.5" with the base, which has a gold plaque engraved "The Jersey Derby Grade III, $1,000,000 Guaranteed, May 27th 1985, Won by Hunter Farms, Spend A Buck, Trainer C. Gambolati." There are two small chips on the trophy but this remains a stunning piece, which was obtained directly from Cam Gambolati, the trainer of winning Spend A Buck, and comes with signed handwritten letter from him. The inflated purse enticed Buck to miss the final two legs of that year's Triple Crown and caused a fundamental shift in purses for the big races.
