Sport #v1 #1 September 1946 Joe DiMaggio Cover Graded CGC 5.0
"Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?", sang Simon and Garfunkel in their hit song "Mrs. Robinson." Years later, when Joe DiMaggio asked Paul Simon what the lyrics meant, Simon replied, "I didn't mean the lyrics literally. I meant that American heroes were in short supply." DiMaggio was one of those American heroes. Offered is a September 1946 copy of Sport magazine with Joe DiMaggio Sr. and Joe DiMaggio Jr. on the cover. The cover story is entitled "The Story of Big and Little Joe DiMaggio." The younger DiMaggio was born in 1942 to the Yankee star and his first wife, actress Dorothy Arnold. The Yankee Clipper, holder of his record setting 56-game hitting streak, returned to baseball in 1946 after spending three years in the U.S. Army. He hit 25 homers and drove in 95 runs while batting .290 that season, fine numbers for most players, but somewhat low for the Hall of Famer as he shook off the rust from three missed seasons. In later times would be Joltin' Joe's divorce from Dorothy Arnold, his marriage to Marilyn Monroe, and periods of estrangement between DiMaggio and his son, his only child. But in 1946, World War II was finally over, baseball warmly welcomed back so many players, and times were good. The magazine measures 8.5x10.25", encapsulated by CGC to 9.5x13.75". The magazine has been graded by CGC as 5.0.
