Stan Mikita Chicago Blackhawks Game Used Stick
Stan Mikita and Andy Bathgate are the two NHL players credited with first using a curved stick, so the displayed offering, an early-to-mid 1970s Stan Mikita game used stick (yes, it has a bend in the blade), is a great remembrance for the Hall of Fame center. Mikita, a native of the Slovak Republic, while it was controlled by Nazi Germany, is the first Slovak player to win a Stanley Cup. Mikita played his entire 22-year career with the Chicago Black Hawks (1958-59 through 1979-80), many of those seasons with Hall of Fame teammate Bobby Hull. Mikita was an 8-time All-Star who played 1,396 games scoring 541 goals and 926 assists for 1.467 points, more than a point per game. Mikita won the Ross Trophy, as the NHL's leading scoring scorer, four times. Amazingly, he is the only man in NHL history to have won the Ross, Hart, and Lady Byng Trophies in the same year, and he did it in consecutive years - in 1966-67 and 1967-68. It is reputed that Mikita got the idea for a curved blade when his stick blade became bent when it was caught in the hockey bench door and Mikita took it to the ice and loved it. Then he started bending the blades on his own. The SHER-WOOD P.M.P. stick is made for a right-handed shot, and it has "MIKITA" stamped on the shaft. On the shaft is written, in both French and English, "Hand made by Drolet Limited Production." There is original tape on the butt end. On the end of the butt is written, by an unknown hand in ink or fine marker, "3." The stick shows nice use, with loose stands of tape, a paint transfer, and a stain above the blade. A curved game used stick that was employed by Stan Mikita, one of the first players to popularize the use of "banana" (curved) sticks, makes a great collectible.
