Steve Prefontaine Original Jersey

Steve Prefontaine Original Jersey

Pre. The name still brings emotion to us all. One of the most legendary track athletes (or any athlete) in our history. This meaty piece once resided in an important Olympics collection where it was bought decades ago for a song. It now comes to the market for the first time in decades. Steve Prefontaine competed in the 1972 Olympics in Munich where he narrowly missed a medal, finishing fourth. He was primarily a long distance runner and is a former American record holder in every running event from 2,000 meters to 10,000 meters. In his junior year of high school the world got its first glimpse of his greatness on the horizon and as a senior he set a national high school record in a two-mile race with a time of 8:41.5. He went to the University of Oregon so he could continue running for his private coach Bill Bowerman, who later founded Nike. This is the actual jersey he wore while running for the University of Oregon. After his freshman year he went undefeated and set the American record in the 5,000 meter race. Following graduation he was determined to medal in the ’76 games in Montreal but before getting the chance he died in a car accident. Yellow jersey is race worn with “Oregon” in green on the front of the tank top. Collar tag “M”. In Near Mint condition. Comes with LOA from the original owner.
