Stunning 1934 World Series Team-Signed Leather Vest w/Walter Johnson & Jimmie Foxx (JSA)
Presented is a gorgeous 1934 World Series leather vest with 28 autographs, including signatures from Hall of Famers Walter Johnson and Jimmie Foxx. The approx. 20x23" vest has no manufacturer tag and seems to be a one-of-a-kind offering that was created by a single, unknown person. The 1934 World Series matched the St. Louis Cardinals Gashouse Gang against the Detroit Tigers, with the Cardinals winning in seven games to capture the team's third World Championship in eight years. The hitting star for the Cardinals was Joe "Ducky" Medwick, who hit .379 in the match-up, with a Series-high five RBIs. The Dean brothers led the St. Louis pitching in the Series. Dizzy and Paul Dean each won two games and they combined for 28 strikeouts and an ERA of only 1.43. In Game 4 of the Series, Dizzy Dean pinch ran and broke up a double play by getting hit on the forehead with a throw from second base. It's been said that one St. Louis newspaper had an intentionally ambiguous headline reading, "X-ray of Dean's head shows nothing." Recovered from his baseline beaning, Dizzy Dean won World Series Game 7 in a 11-0 Cardinal rout at Detroit's Navin Field. The Cardinals' Ducky Medwick slid hard into the Detroit third baseman, Marv Owen, in the 6th inning and then in the bottom of the 6th inning, Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis ordered Medwick to be removed from the game for his own safety when Detroit fans began throwing bottles and fruit at him. The vest has been signed by Hall of Famers Walter Johnson and Jimmie Foxx. Walter Johnson, "The Big Train," was one of five inaugural inductees into the Hall of Fame in 1936. He pitched for 21 seasons, all with the Washington Senators, and he won 417 games, second only to Cy Young in MLB history. He won two American League MVP Awards, three Pitching Triple Crowns, and was a key member of the 1924 Washington Senators World Champions. Jimmie Foxx played 20 Major League seasons - for the Philadelphia Athletics, the Boston Red Sox, the Chicago Cubs, and the Philadelphia Phillies. He was versatile, playing first base, third base, the outfield and even catching. Foxx had an amazing American League MVP season in 1932. He batted .368, with 151 runs, 169 RBIs, and 58 home runs. He actually hit 60 homers in '32, and Foxx would have tied Ruth's single season home run record, but two of the games in which Jimmie hit home runs were rained out. When he retired, Foxx's 534 home runs were second only to Babe Ruth's 714. Known as "The Beast" and "Double X," Foxx had a lifetime average of .325. The Beast was a 9-time All-Star, a 3-time AL MVP, a 2-time World Series Champion, a 2-time AL Batting leader, a 4-time AL home run leader, and a winner of an AL Triple Crown in 1933. The 28 signatures are located all over the vest - on both sides, and on the top and bottom. Each signature was written in either blue or black ink from a steel-tip fountain pen. Other Hall of Famers signing the vest: Cronin, Frisch, Averill, Cochrane, Greenberg, and Goslin. Other signatures include: Vosmik, McNair, McCosky, Morrison, Dykes, and Haas. On the front left chest of the vest is a red, white, and blue patch showing three gold stars and gold letter "PI." On the upper left chest area of the vest is printed, in ink from an unknown hand, "World Series Broadcast through the courtesy of the Ford Motor Co," and also in an unknown hand "Note back of jacket." Across the front of the jacket, "Philippines" is written in large script in black ink from an unknown hand. below the "Philippines" is written, again in an unknown hand, "Pearl of the Orient Sea (USN)." On the lower right front, is a circle, and an unknown hand wrote "EPT" within the circle. On the top of the back is printed, in black letters and numerals, "DETROIT TIGERS -1934 - CHAMPION." The back of the jacket has the following, written or printed in blue ink from a steel-tip pen: Line scores of each of the first six games in the '34 World Series (it can be surmised that the originator of the vest was too disheartened by the Detroit 11-0 rout in Game 7 that he was disinclined to add the line score); A diagram of a baseball field with the Detroit Tigers' starters at each position; "Tigers Team Leaders" and "Leading Pitcher." The multi-signed vest comes with a JSA Letter of Authenticity for the above-mentioned signatures. As a valued collectible, the signed vest combines autographs of Hall of Famers and stars with a uniquely decorated vest honoring the 1934 World Series.
