Stunning Silk Showing the 11 Winners of the Suburban Handicap from 1884 Through 1894
IN 1895, The Coney Island Jockey Club produced a beautiful silk 24" wide by 27" high. The New York Times wrote in 1895 that the club handed out a fabulous silk souvenir to certain attendees at the 1895 Suburban renewal. It contains eleven pictures of each winner of their classic race originally painted by Henry Stull. The Horses are: General Monroe (1884), Pontiac (1885), Troubadour (1886), Eurus (1887), Elkwood (1888), Raceland (1889),Salvator (1890), Loantaka (1891), Montana (1892), Lowlander (1893) & Ramapo (1894).All pictures are approximately, 4 ½" wide by 3 ½" high, with the exception of Ramapo being 6" wide by 4 3/4" high. A stem with flowers also appears. All horses are with jockeys except two that appear solo. The wording at the bottom is "Suburban Winners," and "Coney Island Jockey Club."There are very minor issues. The silk is in exceptional condition with vibrant illustrations of each racehorse. There are two very small stains not affecting any of the images. It is extremely difficult to maintain a silk item in this phenomenal condition for over 127 years.
