The Althea Gibson Collection (21 photos)
Althea Gibson, the first African American woman to play the professional tennis circuit, actually preceded Arthur Ashe in breaking the race barrier in the sport. An iconic figure in both tennis and civil rights she looks magnificent in these photos. Although she appears mostly in tennis photographs there are a few interesting exceptions where she is seen with a basketball for a Harlem Globetrotters performance, in a still from "Horse Soldiers" a film in which she played a role, and even with a set of golf clubs. The dynamic tennis star is beautifully captured in this collection. Sizes vary but most measure 8.5"x11" and many have news clippings on the back.
