The Finest 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Poster Collection Extant (100)
This amazing collection of 1980 Winter Olympic Games posters is unrivaled by any we've seen to date. Its overall condition is NRMT and includes several fantastic pieces. The first piece is a framed poster - 17.5x22.5", of Miracle on Ice team members Mark Johnson and Bobby Suter and is inscribed "To [unreadable], thanks so much for your help throughout the entire Olympic Games. Your friend, Mark Johnson #10." Inscription and signature is faded and 4/10. A 17x11" color copy of the 1980 USA Hockey Team, also known as the Miracle on Ice, is accompanied by a 16x20 autographed poster of the team on the gold medal podium. Signatures in blue Sharpie, include coach Herb Brooks, Ken Morrow, Jim Craig, Buzz Schneider, Rob McClanahan, Dave Silk, John Harrington, Mark Wells, Bill Baker, Dave Christian, Mark Johnson, Bob Suter and Steve Christoff. Signatures average 8/10 and poster is NRMT. Also in this lot is a framed and matted 32x26" drawing of Lake Placid Village. A poster showing the Olympic Ski Jump and ski lodge of the Lake Placid games is still in its original plastic and mint. Eight posters generally showing winter games sports, including bobsled, figure skating and slalom as well as winter scenes and general graphics for the games. A panoramic photo print shows the opening games photographed by Norm Kerr and printed compliments of Eastman Kodak. Another piece is a first printing poster of the Poetry on the Buses program run in Lake Placid during the games, supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. It features a poem by Tom Clark, The First Olympics: 776 BC and measures 28x11". It hasw some creases on the left-hand corners. An 11.5x17.5 point-of-purchase ad offers a special Coca Cola Winter Games ski hat for $2.79 (plus tax) with the purchase of a 16 oz. Coca Cola. It has tape marks and several creases. It is accompanied by a 24x18" full-color advertising poster for the eight Coca Cola commemorative bottles for the games as well as a point-of-purchase advertising piece for commemorative Coca Cola bottles for the 13th Winter Olympics with some creases. Two 22x14" posters from the Olympics National Fine Arts Philatelic Covers and Postal Cards from 1978 and 1980 are in mint condition. A 17x11" sign indicating the "Speed Skating Shuttle Bus" is in VG condition with some stains. All in all, a great tribute to the 1980 Winter Games.
