The Finest Carl Hubbell Letter
There's some incredible content here in this letter written by the Hall of Famer to Vernon Markwell, who would go on to deliver Carl Hubbell's eulogy. A fellow Meeker, Oklahoma, resident, this prepared him for that moment of tribute. Documented here is Hubbell's admission: "I am more proud of this record than anything else.". He then goes into fascinating detail of him winning a record 24 consecutive games in 1936-37, "The Hall of Fame was just getting off the ground (1936)... there was no way to judge the record." The issue was it was over two seasons, so they asked the "President of the National League, (Ford Frick who also screwed Roger Maris) and he said no", so it was not a "world record." Furthermore, 19 games "were all complete games" and both seasons "they helped the Giants to win the pennant." Fittingly on Giants stationery dated 8-5-80 and signed in full at the top, the letter has some paper loss to the corners but otherwise is NRMT and mounted on paper.
