Thurman Munson Last Game & Day of Wake Full Unused Tickets (2)
One of the most beloved Yankees, catcher Thurman Munson was taken from us too early in the summer of 1979, at the age of 32. Here are tickets from two very sad and historic games involving the only Yankee ever to win the Rookie of the Year and MVP awards. Thurman's last game (EX-) and the day of his wake (some creasing) when dear friend Graig Nettles hit the deciding, two-run home run. It was an emotional time for the Yanks and their fans as they lost their first captain since Lou Gehrig held the rare and esteemed honor 40 years earlier. In his final game, Munson actually played first base and was subbed out after two plate appearances, resulting in a first-inning walk (after which he scored on a Reggie Jackson home run) and a third-inning strikeout before being removed for Jim Spencer. Munson - an amateur pilot - sustained a broken neck and died of asphyxiation after successfully landing his Cessna Citation at Akron-Canton Airport after an off-day flight near his hometown on August 2.
