Time #v10 #19 November 7, 1927 Cover Coach Rockne Graded CGC 5.0

When Knute Rockne appeared on the cover of the Nov. 7, 1927, issue of Time, his team was undefeated. Rockne was already a coaching legend. Since magazines normally appear before the date on the cover, Minnesota's tie game with Notre Dame on Nov. 5, 1927 was likely still in the future when the magazine went to press. Now, people talk about the so-called Sports Illustrated jinx, as numerous personages have appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated only to suffer defeats or injury. Perhaps it's because you usually have to be really good to make a magazine cover, and in sports, staying on top for long is rare. In any event, after the appearance of this Rockne Time cover, his Notre dame Fighting Irish lost their only game of the season as they were defeated by Army, 18-0, at Yankee Stadium. On the cover, under the photo of Rockne, is "Coach Rockne." Rockne's name is then followed by his strict dietary rules for his team. "No chocolate, cocoa, greasy fried potatoes, pork or bananas." Rockne was a living legend, famous for his "Win one for the Gipper" speech. At Notre Dame, in his 13 coaching seasons, the former All-American end at Notre Dame won 105 games, with 12 loses and five ties. The College Hall of Famer won three consensus National Titles at Notre Dame. The magazine measures 8x11.25". It is encapsulated and graded CGC 5.0.
