Tony Conigliaro Fenway Park Debut & 1st Home Run Ticket Stub with Signed Photo Display (PSA)
Tony Conigliaro's career has all the elements of a Greek tragedy - except one: Conigliaro's baseball downfall was not because of any tragic flaw within himself, but rather from pure happenstance, entirely out of his control. Presented is a Fenway Park ticket stub from Conigliaro's first game at Fenway, on April 17, 1964. "Tony C." was then only 19 years old and he was local: He was born in Revere, Massachusetts, only 6.7 miles from Boston and he went to high school in Lynn, Massachusetts, only 13.1 miles from the Hub City. In Boston's first home game of the season, Conigliaro came to bat in the second inning against the Chicago White Sox, and he homered, his first. He was off to a terrific start, and hit 24 homers, and had 52 RBIs, in only 111 games as a rookie. Sadly, three years later, on August 18, 1967, with the California Angels' Jack Hamilton on the mound at Fenway, a fastball accidentally got away from Hamilton and hit Tony C. in the face, causing serious injuries, including severe damage to his left retina. Conigliaro made an amazing comeback in 1969 when he was the AL Comeback Player of the Year with 20 homers and 82 RBIs. He was even better in 1970, with lifetime highs in home runs (36) and RBIs (116). He was traded to the California Angels for the 1970 season, and his eyesight became very poor. He stopped playing and later attempted several comebacks, but his eyesight eventually deteriorated even more, and he was finished with baseball at age 30. He passed away in 1990, at only 45 years of age. The offered ticket stub (approx. 1.5" x 3.5") is a grandstand ticket with a price of $2.25. This stub has creases, with tape. The display also has a beautiful color image (approx.7" x 9") of Tony. C. poised to swing. This photo has some creases, and the creases may have been taped from underneath. A 2" x 5.75" plaque reads, "Tony Conigliaro #25/ Original game ticket [stub] from his first at-bat at Fenway Park, a home run in the second inning vs. the Chicago White Sox/ Final score: Red Sox 4 - White Sox 1". Conigliaro finished his rookie campaign with 24 home runs and a .290 average. The display also has 2" high numerals "25", Tony C.'s number. Tony was the youngest player to ever reach 100 homers, but his injured sight meant that he would finish his career with 166 home runs, and a batting average of .264. Conigliaro has neatly signed his photo in blue ink from a ballpoint pen. The vivid display is matted and framed at 20" x 16". It comes with a PSA LOA.
