Ty Cobb Photograph used for T206 Card w/Ty Cobb's Writing on the Back (PSA)

Ty Cobb Photograph used for T206 Card w/Ty Cobb's Writing on the Back (PSA)

Tremendous portrait photo of a young Ty Cobb includes writing on verso in his own hand. Photo measures approximately 5x7" and this image was used for his iconic T206 card, circa 1909-11. The Georgia Peach himself has identified the image in his own writing on the back in his customary green ink, reading, "My second year in Major League. Just up from the south land (sic) - then I was a church & Sunday school boy." His name is also written above in blue ink in unknown hand. Encapsulated by PSA as Type IV - while this means that it is "...A 2nd generation photograph (or 3rd or later generation), developed from a duplicate negative or wire transmission," PSA also dates this image as circa 1930, making it vintage in its own right. Per Cobb's notation, his youthful visage should come as no surprise as it would date the original from 1906 - when the future Hall of Famer was a mere 19 years old. While he batted an impressive .316 that season, few could have imagined the greatness that was to follow, leading to an astounding .366 career average, still the best in MLB history. Photo displays magnificently despite one small crease in the lower right corner.
