Walt Bond Baseball Contracts (4)
These Puerto Rican Winter League contracts symbolize Walt Bond's courage and desire to play ball even while battling leukemia. Bond, after playing with the Kansas City Monarchs, was signed by the Indians in 1960 and in a signal moment hit 2 homers in an exhibition game in New Orleans -- the 1st non-Negro league game there in which black fans were allowed in. He joined the Astros in '64 and had a 20-homer, 85-RBI season. He began the '67 season with the Twins but died in September at age 29. These contracts are from the '63-64 and '64-65 PRWL seasons, with 2 duplicates from '65-65. His salary both seasons was $700 a month. Sigs are NRMT, contracts are EX+.
