War Admiral Press Photo Collection (26)
This collection of original press photos chronicles Seabiscuit's arch rival -- the great Triple Crown champion and 1937 Horse of the Year War Admiral. This Sam Riddle-owned nearly jet black son of the legendary Man O’ War was a premier racing attraction for three racing seasons throughout the late 1930s. During this time, he dominated the sport with 21 wins in 26 starts, including the 1937 Triple Crown. Following the release of Laura Hillenbrand's No.1 best-selling book Seabiscuit and subsequent Universal Pictures film, War Admiral perhaps is best known for his 1938 match race against the iconic underdog known as “The Biscuit.” Although War Admiral had a more impressive race record than his famous folk hero rival, Seabiscuit bested him in what was deemed the “Race of the Century” in their highly anticipated showdown at Pimlico Race Course. War Admiral retired in 1939, but his on-track success followed him as a stallion, and his influence on the breed, mostly through his daughters, reverberates into modern racing's generations. The 26 original press photos in this spectacular collection date from 1937 to 1939 and feature both his competition on the racetrack and some rarely seen images of the talented yet temperamental champion in training, including his own preparation for the famous match race. The selection of racing images include a classic stretch photo in the heralded 1937 Belmont Stakes, as well as the visual accounts from the following races: 1937 Washington Handicap, first start as a 4-year-old at Hialeah, 1938 Widener Stakes, 1938 Massachusetts Handicap, 1938 Whitney Stakes, 1938 Jockey Club Gold Cup and a very rare image from his lone 1939 start and victory in his final career race.
