Lot # 48: 1948-49 Leaf Baseball #8 Satchel Paige Rookie Card SGC FR 1.5
1948-49 Leaf #8 Satchel Paige rookie card. Graded FR 1.5 by SGC. Considered one of the most important postwar baseball cards, Satchel Paige's historic rookie card is also one of the rarest. Paige was one of forty-nine short print cards in the 108-card 1948-49 Leaf set. That, along with Paige's legendary status in the game and the fact that it represents his rookie card, has made Paige's 1948-49 Leaf one of the most sought after cards in the hobby. This example originates from our consignor's father, who collected it as a child, and has never before been offered for sale, either publicly or privately. (The card was submitted for grading by Lelands.)
In addition to making its hobby debut in this sale, the card also holds the distinction of being perhaps the most attractive FR 1.5 example ever offered. The reason for its technically accurate grade is mainly due to a small amount of surface-paper loss near the base of the reverse left border. Otherwise, the card is closer to VG in its frontal appearance and one that would be a welcome addition to any advanced 1948-49 Fleer or Hall of Fame card collection.

Baseball and Trading Cards
Lot # 1: 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings Peck & Snyder Trade Card - Large Variation (PSA)
Rare and historically significant Peck & Snyder trade card featuring a team photo of the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings, baseball's first all-professional team. PSA has encapsulated the card and certified it as "Authentic." This trade card was produced in two sizes at the time, with the offered card the larger and more desirable of the two variations. The rarity of the card is reflected in the fact that is is one of only seven large-format examples listed in the PSA Population Report, with all having received an "Authentic" designation.
The 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings Peck & Snyder trade card is universally regarded as one of the most important cards in the hobby because in many ways it can be considered the first true baseball card. Professionalism in baseball began in earnest with the formation of the 1869 Red Stockings and just two years later the success of the club led to the formation of the National Association, baseball's first professional league. The card features the most well-known image of the 1869 Red Stockings, all of whom are pictured in uniform posing together in a formal studio setting. The printed caption at the base of the mount reads "Red Stocking B. B. Club of Cincinnati." Above the caption, each player is identified in print: "Hurley, Sub.; G. Wright, S.S.; Allison, C.; McVey, R.F.; Leonard, L.F.; Sweasy, 2d B.; Waterman, 3d B.; H. Wright, C.F.; Brainard, P.; Gould, 1st B." The reverse features advertising for the Peck & Snyder's "Base Ball and Sportsman's Emporium," located in New York City. Like the variation in size, this card was also issued in both red and black color schemes. The offered card features the red coloration, including the trim along the front, and all the printing on the reverse.
The reason for PSA's "Authentic" designation is due to the card having been trimmed along the top and bottom borders (trimming is a flaw common to nearly all known examples of this card). Additionally, the top and bottom corners on the left side have been clipped. Still, this iconic card remains in Very Good condition, with only one significant half-inch crease near the middle of the card on its left side. The photographic image grades VG-EX. Nearly all known examples of this card are housed in either public institutions or the most advanced private collections. As a result, 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings Peck & Snyder trade card are seldom seen at auction. This is just the second time in the past twenty-five years we have offered this card, and it will probably be quite a long time before another surfaces.

Baseball Autographs
Lot # 623: Circa 1921 Christy Mathewson Single-Signed Baseball from The Geddy Lee Collection (JSA)
Official National League (Heydler) baseball signed by Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson in black fountain across the sweet spot. Mathewson's signature grades 7/10 on average, with just slight fading to the "so" in Mathewson. It must be noted that JSA has determined that a tiny portion of both the "C" in "Christy" and the "a" in "Mathewson" have been slightly enhanced in blue ink (not noticeable to the naked eye) but the remainder of the signature is untouched.
This ball dates to the 1919-24 manufacturing period. At the time, Mathewson was suffering from tuberculosis, the disease that eventually took his life in 1925 at the age of forty-five. His early passing is the main reason for the rarity of Mathewson single-signed balls today. This is just the third we have ever offered and one of probably fewer than twenty known, many of which are in far lesser condition. The offered ball also comes with the unique provenance of having once resided in the fame Geddy Lee Collection. (Geddy Lee sold his entire collection at auction in 2023 and this ball has been consigned directly by the purchaser in that sale.) The ball is also featured in Geddy Lee's limited-edition book "72 Stories from the Collection of Geddy Lee."
The ball displays light, scattered age toning, and a few minor surface abrasions. Most of the manufacturer's stampings remain legible and ball is in overall Very Good to Excellent condition. Full LOA from JSA. Additional letter of provenance from Geddy Lee. (Please note: PSA would not issue an LOA for this ball due to policies related to the minor enhancement.)

Baseball Autographs
Lot # 624: Exceptional Babe Ruth Single-Signed Baseball (PSA NM+ 7.5 Overall)
Extraordinary Babe Ruth single-signed baseball with outstanding provenance. PSA has graded the ball NEAR MINT+ 7.5 overall (the signature is graded NM 7 and the ball is graded NM 7, with a half-point added for eye appeal, resulting in a final overall grade of NM+ 7.5). Ruth's signature has been beautifully scripted in black fountain pen across the sweet spot of this Official American League (Harridge) baseball. The manufacturer's stampings are very light, but they are legible upon close examination. While all grading is subjective, we feel that PSA was conservative in both its grading of the signature and ball. The grade, as always, is in the eye of the beholder, and we will let the photos on our website speak for themselves.
This ball has been in our consignor's family for over twenty-five years and prior to that it belonged to a former Ford Motor Company executive, who personally met Ruth in 1947 while Ruth was working with Ford in its sponsorship of Junior American Legion Baseball. In 1990, the former owner, who was ill at the time, related the history of the ball to his wife, who dutifully transcribed the story on paper. In addition to the written history, the ball is accompanied by an original photo of Ruth posing with members of the Ford Motor Company's Western Region office in San Francisco, including the original owner. The ball, along with the letter of provenance and the photo, were subsequently gifted to our consignor's father in 2001, who was close friends with the original owner. That fact is established by a second letter from the original owner's wife (which accompanies the ball) in which she conveys her husband's wishes that the ball be left to his friend upon his death. This is a spectacular Babe Ruth single-signed baseball in all respects and one that also comes with the added appeal of being new to the hobby. Full LOA from PSA (graded NM+ 7.5).

Lot # 1018: 1970s Johnny Bench Cincinnati Reds Signed Game Worn Batting HelmetJohnny Bench, with his incredible combination of offense and defense, is regarded by many baseball pundits as the Greatest of All Time catcher, the baseball catcher G.O.A.T. Offered is a 1970s Johnny Bench game worn, signed, Cincinnati Reds batting helmet. The Hall of Famer played his entire Major League career with Cincinnati (1962-83). Bench was a 2-time World Champion as a key member of the 1970s "Big Red Machine." The 2-time MVP was also the 1976 World Series MVP. Bench, a 14-time All-Star, batted a lifetime .267, with 388 home runs. The 1968 NL Rookie of the Year was a 2-time NL home run champ. On defense, Bench had a cannon arm, with great accuracy. He was a 10-time Gold Glove winner as a catcher. The offered ABC flapless helmet shows great use: scratches and abrasions in various spots and sweat stains on the sweat band. "BENCH" is in vintage red Dymo tape on back. The "C" on front-brim is signed by Bench in black felt tip but is a little light. An American Baseball Cap size 7 5/8 sticker is inside. Also, "7 5/8" is also written inside in black marker. Raised lettering on the inside brim reads, "AMERICAN BASEBALL CAP/MEDIA, PENNA." Bench had a very large hat and helmet size. All padding inside is intact. Bench wore a flapless helmet like this when up to bat and also when he was behind the plate catching. The game worn Cincinnati Reds Bench helmet makes a terrific remembrance for an all-time great.

The gray knit jersey is lettered "Orioles" across the front and features the number "8" on the left breast and reverse. Lot # 1036: 1965-68 Roberto Clemente Pittsburgh Pirates Game Used Bat (PSA GU 8)Roberto Clemente H&B pro-model ("G105") bat dating from the 1965 to 1968 manufacturing period. Graded GU 8 by PSA. The signature-model bat, which measures 36 inches and weighs 37.9 ounces, displays moderate use, including a crack in the upper handle. Several ball marks and stitch impressions are visible on the left and back barrel, as are green rack marks, and blue paint (possibly from a bat rack). There is also trace evidence of a number written on the knob which has faded beyond legibility. As noted in the accompanying LOA from PSA, the "G105" model was a favorite of Clemente during the referenced manufacturing period and both the size and weight perfectly match factory records from the time. The four-year span 1965 to 1968 was one of the most productive periods of Clemente's career, a time during which he won two of his four batting titles (1965 and 1967) and his one MVP Award (1966). Full LOA from PSA (graded GU 8).

Lot # 1139: 1962 Wilt Chamberlain 100-Point Game Ticket Stub PSA GD 2 (Pop 1 of 4 - Only 3 Higher)
Rare ticket stub from Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-Point game on March 2, 1962. Graded GOOD 2 by PSA (submitted by Lelands). This is one of only 20 examples of this ticket stub listed in the PSA Population. Excluding qualifiers, only four are graded at this level, with just three graded higher.
The low population report is not surprising, as only 4,124 fans attended the game. Given their rarity, it appears few stubs were saved despite Chamberlain's record-setting performance. Our consignor, who attended the game that day along with other members of his South Lebanon High School basketball team, has graciously provided a one-page typed letter in which he recounts his many memories from the game. The ticket has been in his possession since that day and, as such, is new to the hobby. Chamberlain's 100-point ticket stub has appreciated dramatically in recent times, as evidenced by the PSA 3 example in Lelands' Winter 2002 auction that sold for a record price of $107,828.
Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-Point game is still talked about today as the greatest feat ever performed on the hardwood, sometimes in mythical tones when one considers that the three-point line wasn’t adopted by the NBA until 1979. This ticket stub commemorates that historic achievement and represents what many consider the most significant basketball ticket in the hobby. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to obtain a high-grade example of this iconic relic as we celebrate the 63nd anniversary of Chamberlain's historic achievement. The ticket stub measures approximately 1.75x1.5".

Lot # 1117: 1932 World Series Game 3 Babe Ruth "Called Shot" Ticket Stub PSA AuthenticChicago Cubs ticket stub issued for the historic Game 3 of the 1932 World Series in which Babe Ruth "called" his home run in the fifth inning. PSA has encapsulated the ticket stub and certified it as "Authentic." This is one of the most desirable of all World Series ticket stubs and a requisite for any advanced ticket or Babe Ruth collection. Whether or not Ruth actually pointed to the center field bleachers before hitting his famous home run has been debated for decades, but it remains one of the most memorable moments in baseball history, and "Ruth's Called Shot" is so ingrained in popular culture that even non-fans are familiar with the reference. The ticket stub (2.25x3.75") displays heavy creasing throughout, minor small stains, light pencil notations on the front and reverse, and a few small edge tears.

Lot # 1259: 1921 New York Yankees Original Team Photograph w/Babe Ruth (PSA Type I)Displayed is a rare 1921 original New York Yankees team photo of the first-ever American League pennant won by the American League franchise. That season the Yankees went 98-55 to take the AL flag but lost the best-of-nine (5-3 in games) World Series to their "landlords," the long-established home team in New York City's Polo Grounds V. The Yankees were renting the Polo Grounds before later moving to the new Yankee Stadium. Ruth is pictured in the top row, third from the right. The Bambino batted .378 in 1921, and he led the AL with both 59 homers and 168 RBIs. Other Hall of Famers in the photo: Home Run Baker, top row in the middle, five places from each side; Waite Hoyt, middle row, third from left; manager Miller Huggins, front row center, five from each side. Some other Yankees notables: Wally Pipp, the first baseman that Lou Gehrig replaced when the Iron Horse began his then-record consecutive games streak of 2,130 on June 1, 1925. Pipp is in the top row, third from the left; Carl Mays, star pitcher, top row fourth from the left; Bob Meusel, star outfielder, top row, at far right; Roger Peckinpaugh, star shortstop, middle row, second from right. The photo exhibits some corner wear, but the image is in fantastic shape and very clear. There are Brown Brothers stamps on back. The 8x10" black & white photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "TYPE I AUTHENTIC."

Lot # 1226: 1877 "Christo Von Buffalo" Original Cartoon Artwork (Oct. 13th - Buffalo vs. Boston) with George Wright - The First Baseball Cartoon!
This lot features one of thirty-four original cartoon artworks created in 1877 by Buffalo artist Christopher Smith (known locally as "Christo Von Buffalo"), all of which are being offered individually in this sale. It is important to understand that these thirty-four original artworks represent the very first baseball cartoons and, collectively, are the most historically significant such offering to ever appear at auction. All the artworks have remained in the sole possession of the Smith family since 1877 and have never before been offered for sale, either publicly or privately. Lelands is proud to have been chosen to offer these artworks to the collecting community for the first time. A more detailed history of the artworks, as well as further information about Christopher Smith, follows each lot description.
LOT DESCRIPTION
Original India ink-on-paper cartoon artwork, by Christopher Smith, documenting the game played between the Buffalo Bisons and Boston Red Stockings on October 13, 1877. Signed by the artist, "Christo," in the lower left quadrant. The artwork pictures two Boston players hoisting a large ball that reads "Champions of the World 1877." In the background Boston's star shortstop George Wright is pictured carrying a Buffalo head on the end of his bat as a trophy, while a Buffalo player tells him "That's hardly (W)right George." (The name "G. Wright" is printed on Wright's belt.) The score of the game, "Bos - 8. B - 0," is printed along the base of the mount. This is one of the few Smith cartoon artworks in the collection that features a specific player by name and likeness (as opposed to generic images). The fact that it is Hall of Fame shortstop George Wright, one of the most important nineteenth-century baseball players, makes it all the more appealing. The drawing has been rendered on paper (8.5x6.5"), which in turn is affixed to a larger cardboard mount (10.5x8.5").
HISTORY
Unlike many of the rites and traditions associated with our national pastime, the origins of which remain shrouded in mystery, the history of baseball cartoons is well known. The art form began in the summer of 1877, when Christopher Smith, known more familiarly to his local fans as Christo Von Buffalo, began recording the daily diamond exploits of his hometown Buffalo Bisons during the club's inaugural season. The Bisons were a professional club founded in August of that year and played an independent schedule against other professional and local clubs before joining the International Association in 1878. Smith, who ran a paint and sign shop in town with his brother, was hired by the club as its official scorer. An amateur artist, he also began drawing a cartoon that commented upon that day's game. Upon completion, he displayed his illustration in the window of Joseph Garson's clothing store in downtown Buffalo, where it could be seen by all the city's "cranks." When signing his artworks, he used the shortened signature "Christo." Because the artworks were shown publicly, all have condition flaws consistent with their former manner of display, including tack and/or staple holes in the corners, small corner tears/chips/abrasions, and minor surface wear.
Buffalo compiled a record of ten wins, twenty-seven losses and three ties in 1877. We do not know if Smith produced a cartoon for all forty games that year, but only thirty-four of his original cartoons have survived, all of which are offered in this sale. (Thirty-two of the cartoons comment on games, the other two provide commentary on the upcoming schedule.) Smith continued drawing Buffalo baseball cartoons in subsequent years, some of which were later published as cabinet cards, but none of those later originals have survived. (Today, those published baseball cabinets featuring Smith's artwork are exceedingly rare, with a recent offering of one at auction in 2022 realizing a final sale price of $7,200.) Unfortunately, Smith's cartooning career ended abruptly upon his untimely death in 1879. His short two-year career as a cartoonist is the main reason why his name is not more well known today. Research has failed to find any baseball cartoons preceding those drawn by Christopher Smith, thereby establishing him as baseball's first cartoonist.
For more information about Christopher Smith we encourage bidders to read Joseph Overfield's excellent biography that was first published in the 1981 Baseball Research Journal and which can now be accessed online at the SABR website (link: https://sabr.org/journal/article/christo-von-buffalo-was-he-the-first-baseball-cartoonist/). Overfield's article pictures many of the cartoons offered in this sale. Included with each lot is a copy of an article about Smith's cartoons published in the July 3, 1938, issue of The Buffalo Times , plus a copy of a letter to our consignor's family from the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996 in which the Hall enthusiastically requested a donation of the thirty-four cartoons (obviously, the family declined).

Original India ink-on-paper cartoon artwork, by Christopher Smith, documenting the game played between the Buffalo Bisons and Louisville Grays on August 14, 1877. Signed by the artist, "Christo," in the lower right corner. Like he did for every cartoon, Smith listed the date along the top border of the mount and the score of the game along the base. This is one of the few cartoons chronicling a game between Buffalo and a member of the National League. Louisville won the game 3-0, but given that Louisville was sitting atop the standings of the National League on August 14th, the score was obviously closer than would have been expected. That is obvious in Smith's cartoon, which pictures a proud Buffalo smoking a cigar while stating "I can hold my Head with any other Club." In the background, a Louisville player sits on a large orb that reads "At Present we are Champions of the United States." The drawing has been rendered on paper (8.5x6.5"), which in turn is affixed to a larger cardboard mount (10.5x8.5).

Original India ink-on-paper cartoon artwork, by Christopher Smith, documenting the game played between the Buffalo Bisons and Chicago White Stockings on August 28, 1877. Signed by the artist, "Christo," in the lower left corner. Like he did for every cartoon, Smith listed the date along the top border of the mount and the score of the game along the base. This is one of the few cartoons chronicling a game between Buffalo and a member of the National League. Chicago won the game 4-2, but, as the cartoon implies, the real victory was in Buffalo not being shut out. The illustration pictures a Buffalo dumping a can of white wash on a Chicago player while stating "You were going to whitewash me eh?" A member of the Buffalo club, identified as "Dillon" is pictured hugging a female fan, who exclaims "Dillon you are my darling." The drawing has been rendered on paper (8.5x6.5"), which in turn is affixed to a larger cardboard mount (10.5x8.5").
Chicago had played St. Louis on August 25th and was en route to a National League game against Hartford on September 4th when they obviously decided to make a stop in Buffalo to play an exhibition game against the local nine. Hall of Fame Cap Anson was a member of the White Stockings in 1877 and almost certainly took part in the game chronicled here. As noted in the cartoon, Buffalo made an unexpectedly good accounting and the game was actually tied 2-2 at one point.

Original India ink-on-paper cartoon artwork, by Christopher Smith, documenting the game played between the Buffalo Bisons and Alleghany's (Pittsburgh) on September 28, 1877. Signed by the artist, "Christo," in the lower left corner. Like he did for every cartoon, Smith listed the date along the top border of the mount and the score of the game along the base. Alleghany won the game 7-2, with Buffalo's lack of offense the main problem addressed here. This is also one of Smith's most evocative cartoons. Here he makes note of Pittsburgh's steel mills and ever-present smog. The background images features a series of smoke stacks and the caption: "They say that Pittsburgh looks like Hell with the lid kicked off - That accounts for the Alleghany Boys Playing like the Devil." The drawing has been rendered on paper (8.5x6.5"), which in turn is affixed to a larger cardboard mount (10.5x8.5").

Lot # 1242: 1877 "Christo Von Buffalo" Original Cartoon Artwork (Sept. 14th - Buffalo vs. Rochester) - The First Baseball Cartoon!
Original India ink-on-paper cartoon artwork, by Christopher Smith, documenting the game played between the Buffalo Bisons and Rochester on September 14, 1877. Signed by the artist, "Christo," in the lower left corner. Like he did for every cartoon, Smith listed the date along the top border of the mount and the score of the game along the base. This game ended in a 4-1 Buffalo victory and the illustration features a Buffalo player named "Caskin" carrying a bucket filled with members of the Rochester club as he delivers them back to their home city. The drawing has been rendered on paper (8.5x6.5"), which in turn is affixed to a larger cardboard mount (10.5x8.5).

Lot # 661: Superb 1961 Rogers Hornsby Single-Signed Baseball (PSA MINT 9 Overall)
One of the finest Rogers Hornsby single-signed baseballs known. Graded MINT 9 overall by PSA. The signature has been graded MINT 9, the ball NM-MT 8, with a half point added for eye appeal, resulting in an overall graded of MINT 9. Hornsby signed the side panel of this Official American League (Harridge) ball with a blue ballpoint pen. He included "1961" below his signature. The baseball is in pristine condition and the signature rates 9. Hornsby played 23 seasons of Major League baseball and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1942. His last MLB appearance as a player was on July 20, 1937, for the St. Louis Browns, meaning that this ball was signed long after his playing days. Full LOAs from PSA and JSA.

Lot # 862: Beautiful Mordecai Brown Signed Index Card (PSA MINT 9)Index card signed by Hall of Fame pitcher Mordecai Brown. PSA has graded and encapsulated the signature as a MINT 9 example sourcing from the "J. Blattner Collection." Brown's signature, which appears on the unlined side of an index card, has been scripted in black ink along with the inscription "a Cub" below his name. The index card is clean and appears to be NM condition overall. Brown's signature is one of the scarcest of all pre-war Hall of Famers because of timing. Brown died in 1948, but wasn't inducted into the Hall of Fame until the following year, leaving a huge differential between the demand for his autograph and the very limited supply.

Collins has signed the barrel, in black, steel-tip fountain ink. The bat comes with a September 28, 2022, PSA/DNA Letter of Grading and Authenticity. The aforementioned PSA/DNA Letter of Grading and AUTHENTICITY gives the bat a grade of PSA/DNA GU 6, and PSA/DNA notes in the Letter that, "This Letter of AUTHENTICITY is for the bat only. We have no opinion as to the authenticity of the signature." PSA/DNA states in its concluding paragraph,"....it is our opinion the bat is authentic, and was game used by Collins during the referenced period." The offering also comes with a November 9, 2023, JSA Letter of Authenticity that rates the Eddie Collins signature on the bat as "genuine" (Cert. Number: YY48350).
