1813 James Madison Signed Check as President (PSA)
Bank check, dated October 25, 1813, signed by James Madison (1751-1836), fourth President of the United States. The check, drawn on the "Bank of Columbia," is made out to "A. B. or bearer" in the amount of fifty dollars. Signed "James Madison" in black fountain pen (grading 8/10) along the base. Madison was President of the United States at the time he issued this check. While purely speculation, the "A. B." to whom the check is made out to might possibly be Aaron Burr, as the two were close friends. The check (7.25x2.5") displays two tiny remnants of mounting tape (one piece in the lower right corner, the other in the upper left corner), a vertical fold, and several bank cancellation cuts (possibly repaired), two of which touch upon the Madison signature. Mounted (by means of photo corners) and framed together with a likeness of Madison and a descriptive card. Total dimensions: 22x18". Full LOA from PSA. Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
