1818 Declaration of Independence Dedicated to Thomas Jefferson

1818 Declaration of Independence Dedicated to Thomas Jefferson

Benjamin Owen Tyler's exceptional printing of the most important American document is the subject of this lot, as it was created during the resurgence of interest in the original document spurned by Jonathan Trumbull's famous painting. The Declaration of Independence approached its 50th Anniversary, marking a time when "Americans discovered the noble sentiments in the Declaration and began to view it not as a mere instrument of diplomacy, but as a birthright of a nation" (Bidwell). Only 1,000 of these were created and sold for $5, which was quite a lot of money at the time. Engraved by Peter Maverick, it measures 23x29" and is mounted on linen. This is a recently discovered fresh copy and has been cleaned with some repaired tears and wrinkles laid down. Here sits a beautiful specimen, one of the nicest we have seen. It is most rightfully dedicated to its author, "Thomas Jefferson, Patron of Arts, the firm supporter of American Independence, And the Rights of Man..." Lesser specimens have sold in the $15,000-$20,000 range.
