1848 John Brown Check

American abolitionist John Brown’s check, in the amount of $200 (a great sum of money in 1848) drawn on the Cabot Bank. Comes with original envelope printed “District Court, Denver Colorado Booth M. Malone, Judge”. Written in ink is “Valuable - John Brown’s Check.” John Brown is most famous for his takeover of the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry, VA. This was to be the first step in his liberation of the slaves, but he was arrested the next morning by Robert E. Lee and hanged in 1859. Check is EX-MT condition although the writing is a bit light. The hole through the center is an indication that it was paid. Check measures 1.75x6.25" and the envelope is 3.5x6.5”.
