1860's Heenan vs. Sayers Currier & Ives Original Print (10x14")
John C. Heenan, a.k.a. “The Benecia Boy”, American Heavyweight Champion is the subject of this original print by Currier & Ives. Published in the 1860’s with Heenan depicted in period dress as he appeared around the time of that famous epic battle with the great English Champion Thomas Sayers. Gorgeous full color print (hand colored) is underlined by the printed caption, “John C. Heenan, Champion of the World, Born in West Troy New York, May 2, 1835 [height & weight], Beat the Champion of England in 42 rounds April 17th, 1860 - Time 2 hours 20 min.” As the story goes, the match ended in a draw after 2 hours, 20 mins. of fighting before the fight was broken up. Print is matted and framed to 15x20”. Excellent condition except for slight toning, one small crease and a tiny tear, which do nothing to detract from its overall stellar appearance. LOA.
