1869 Ulysses S. Grant Signed Document (PSA)
Displayed is a 1869 warrant for a pardon that is signed by United States President Ulysses S. Grant. He was the 18th President of the United States, and highly regarded as the Civil War general who engineered the Union victory at Vicksburg, and then skillfully handled the Confederate surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox. The totally handwritten document was penned entirely by Grant, and the proclamation reads, "I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to offer the Seal of the United States for the pardon of Aaron C. Sanders dated this day and signed by me and for so doing this shall be his warrant. U.S. Grant/Washington 16th December 1869." Grant's reputation as both a general and a president have been enhanced by scholars in recent years as some of the earlier criticism of Grant in both positions is now held to have been falsehood and exaggeration by his enemies. Grant is now generally regarded as a skillful military strategist and as a president who worked for civil rights and for the protection of African Americans during the period of Reconstruction. The signed proclamation from Grant measures approx. 8x10". The offering also contains a 4.75x6.75" vintage photo of Grant (printed in 1927), in his military uniform. The proclamation and the photo, together, have been matted and framed to 16.2x20.1". Also included in the offering is a photocopy of the slug line on back of the photo: "Photo By International Newsreel. San Francisco Bureau/U.S. Grant in his uniform as commander of the Union forces in the Civil War. Grant found life tame at Knight's Ferry and did reckless things to pass the time....4/19/27." The display is in excellent condition. The warrant for the pardon is signed in 8/10 ink from a fountain pen. The offering comes with a PSA LOA.
