1870's Boxing Statue by Waagen (26" tall)

1870's Boxing Statue by Waagen (26" tall)

Certainly one of the most impressive boxing sculptures we've handled. Divinely detailed bare-knuckle brawler is bronze wash on spelter, and stands on an equally impressive base lined with scenes reminiscent of Roman mythology. Style of dress and boxer's sideburns help to date the piece. Artist's incised signature on base attributes the work to a well-known sculptor most famous for his work in the 1870's. His bronze works have sold at auction for as much as $15,000. It's easy to see why. His command of the human form is clearly evident in his treatment of the pugilist's musculature. DaVinci would be impressed. Truly the work of a master; particularly impressive given its large size. Stop by our offices to see it in person if you possibly can.
