1870s-1880s Yale Football & Baseball Collection Including the Earliest Known Michigan Program! (100+)
Yale was one of the very first universities to field a football team, debuting the sport in 1872. The books in this phenomenal lot will transport you - much like a time machine - to an long-forgotten era, detailing virtually every event at the school during those early years. So much so that you'll feel as if you, yourself, matriculated back around 1881. On the gridiron, the Bulldogs matched up against some of the greatest programs in the nation. Michigan was one such opponent, and this sensational collection includes the earliest known Michigan Program, circa 1881 when Yale blanked the Wolverines in New Haven, 11-0 (program is in NRMT condition but attached to the scrapbook- a one-page gem!). Here is a sampling of what else is inside this true treasure trove of archives: 1876 Harvard-Yale (2nd meeting ever) program, Trinity-Yale 1878, Yale vs. Tufts 1877, Harvard-Yale 1879, Harvard-Yale Freshmen 1879, Columbia-Yale 1880 and Harvard-Yale 1881. There are also 27 baseball programs between 1877 and 1881 and 18 miscellaneous track and regatta programs and scorecards from the same years. The scrapbooks are jam-packed with Yale-related play programs, newspaper articles, tickets, ribbons and commencement programs. The attached programs in the books in general appear to be in NRMT condition, while six of the football programs are loose, scored and in NRMT condition. Yale has won 27 national championships in football over the years, and boasts two of the first three Heisman Trophy winners. This is, quite frankly, a mind-blowing, invaluable slice of history preserved for generations upon generations spanning parts of three centuries.
