1870s Boston Base Ball Grounds Complimentary Pass

1870s Boston Base Ball Grounds Complimentary Pass

This hand-signed 2x3" complimentary pass to the Boston Base Ball Grounds is one of the rarest baseball-related items around, and there is a story behind it... legendary 19th century baseball executive of the Boston Beaneaters, A.H. Soden, has signed this pass, but Soden was renown for his immense stinginess, eventually nearly outlawing free passes to games, even going so far as to denying them for players' wives. Yet here is a pass for free entry for "Two_(2)" written in Soden's own hand in gorgeous flowing black fountain ink. Soden is credited with creating the reserve clause in 1880, a contract element that allowed teams to "reserve" a player for the next season. Pass is in EX-MT condition.
