1880’s Bare-Knuckled Sterling Silver Boxing Belt

1880’s Bare-Knuckled Sterling Silver Boxing Belt

This ornate British boxing belt was given to an unidentified British champion in the 1880s. Incised in the top piece is “Music Hall Sports”. In Victorian England, between 1870 and 1890, activities moved into specialized locations: the music hall and sports ground were sometimes combined as entertainment for the masses especially in the smaller cities. In the center is a photographic image of a boxer and on each side, raised in the silver is an image of a boxer, in short pants with fists in the air. Incised in one of the silver squares, is “Presented by Marie Kendall and Steve McCarlyn”. Made of sterling silver, belt weighs almost three pounds and is 37.5x4” with a 6x7” centerpiece. Intricate in detail, the silver workmanship is magnificent, has a few small dings but nothing that detracts from the beauty of the belt. EX condition, the photograph is buffed.
