1880s Baseball & Football Handpainted METTLACH Beer Stein (Princeton U)

1880s Baseball & Football Handpainted METTLACH Beer Stein (Princeton U)

This 19th century German Mettlach beer stein is for Princeton University Ivy League football and baseball. The Mettlach #2140 PUG stein is comprised of stoneware with an ornate pewter top, and magnificent print under glaze illustration that decorates the body of the stein On one side is a baseball scene, and football on the other, which is actually a rugby scene but was intended to represent American football. Created for a specialized market, this piece does not have the normal marks for Mettlach but it does have #2140 which you can research and find pieces with a similar construction (take into consideration that the sports motif is exceedingly rare). On one side is a university logo with "Hooray! Hooray! Hooray! Tiger! Sis! Boom! Ah! Princeton!" This ceramic piece is highly prized and desirable among Mettlach collectors. Measures approximately 8.75" high and NRMT.
