1880s Boxing Oil On Canvas

1880s Boxing Oil On Canvas

Traditional stereotype akin to the style of the circa 1880s "Base-Ball at Black Town Trade Card Series," whose original trade card, created by Sol Ettinge, depicted the "White Stockings" against the "Black Legs." "First Blood For The Black Legs." This painting features bare knuckle boxing in a roped off area of a field with both participants and spectators being African-Americans. One boxer has just been knocked down and the painted misspelled caption, using an attempt at stereotypical early African-American diction, reads," De Fust Knock-Down." The boxers and fans have caricature faces that employ racial stereotypes to an extreme. This painting predates the era of African-American World Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson and social justice. Painted in the American School" style of painting, employing the form of a somewhat primitive depiction with exaggeration of facial features. Original frame. Nice crackling. Framed at 17.5x21".
