1880s Mickey Welch Fan with Canoe’s Tobacco Advertising - Major New Find
Recently discovered and the only one known to exist. Formerly, this was from a series of four fans from major league players of the 19th century. However, one has NEVER been seen with tobacco advertising. The front advertises “Spence’s Canoe Tobacco.” The verso a man in a canoe who urges you to “Ask For Spence’s Canoe Chewing Tobacco.” This is in many ways a baseball card. At the very least it is one of the earliest known baseball player tobacco premiums. This was likely handed out in tobacco stores or among distributors to promote the product. The graphics are marvelous. Pure Allen and Ginter style and colors befitting of the finest 19th century baseball card graphics. Circular cardboard measures 7.5” in diameter. With the original wooden stick it is 11.5” tall. Has a bit of water damage on the left side, a small crease and tear. Otherwise it is in excellent condition with the colors like new. Graphics are as good as anything you will ever see. A major new hobby find.
