1884 Patent Spalding Baseball Bat
Rare Spalding retail bat patented in 1884. The decorative design features a black-and-gold center brand displaying the "Spalding" logo, below which is printed "No. OO/Pat. June 17, 1884." Two black rings on either side of the center brand complete the attractive motif. The bat displays heavy use, including numerous ball marks on the barrel and adhesive residue on the handle extending twelve inches upward from the knob. The top of the barrel has been neatly sawed with a straight cut and there is also a small 1.5-inch chip at the top (on the backside of the barrel). The bat measures 32.75 inches and weighs 34.5 ounces.
