1884 Sterling Boxing Trophy (12" tall)
Late Victorian solid sterling silver pugilist boxing trophy by Elkington & Co. is an elegant piece of 19th century artistry. Certainly one of the more finely crafted prizes that this century has to offer. Adorned with raised image of pair of boxers in relief behind which is chased and one corner post and the ropes leading to the other posts. This is set in the center of a wreath. The reverse has a matching wreath, which has engraving bearing a Birmingham hallmark with a Victorian duty stamp and lion passant and date 1884. Back of the bowl with smaller version of the ivy leaves and engraved dedication, which reads (in part): “31st 5lbs. Championship…” The slight engravings have been partially rubbed out. Trophy is in terrific vintage original condition with a stepped base with supporting stem having a central knop with bead/pearl decorative goblet/chalice style bowl fitted with two handles with leafage decoration. Weighs 19 oz. with a width at the handles of 5.5”.
