1886 Handwritten Letter Referring to Captain Beecher of FIRST EVER Football Card
Stunning in both content and appearance, this handwritten letter is dated October 26, 1886. It is folded to 5x8" with immaculate black fountain pen handwriting on all four sides, with all football-related content, focusing on Yale football. Of particular note is the mention of Henry Beecher, considered to be the subject of the first-ever football card and was the nephew of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin. "You ought to see Beecher play," states writer W.A. McConnel. "He is something like Harding, one minute he is in the midst of a crowd and the next he has the ball running for the goal." Includes mailing folds but the letter is in outstanding condition with white paper and dark ink; such early football letters are difficult to find.
