1886 Joseph E. Johnston Signature with Photograph (PSA MINT 9)
Joseph E. Johnston was a career officer who served with distinction in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). He was also one of the most senior general officers in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War and was noted for his cat-and-mouse face-off with Gen. Sherman in the southern theater. Despite Johnston's masterful maneuvering to avoid and fend off the much larger Union command, he would eventually succumb, and by some accounts, was responsible for giving up the critical city of Atlanta. Offered here is a 4” wide by 5” high cabinet-style portrait of Johnston in uniform in a bust-length pose coupled with a 4” wide by 2.5” high cut signature “J.E. Johnston” with a hand-written date below it (“December 6th 1886”). Both the photo and signature pieces are perfectly mounted together on a board that measures 6.25” wide by 9.5” high. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder, the cut signature received a grade of Mint 9 from PSA. This rates as one of the finest Johnston signatures we've seen.
