1886 William Tecumseh Sherman Signed Carte de Visite (PSA)
Presented is the chance to possess an 1886 General William Tecumseh Sherman signed carte de visite. Sherman was a West Point graduate and a close friend of Ulysses S. Grant, the head of U.S. Forces during the American Civil War - and later U.S. President. As the head of the U.S. Army's Western Theater, Sherman conducted his famous "March to the Sea" from late 1864 to early 1865. Carrying out a highly controversial "scorched earth" policy, Sherman believed that the will of the Confederate Army and that of the Confederate civilians had to be broken for the war to end. Sherman's troops marched through Georgia, burning factories and homes, and he captured Atlanta. Then Sherman continued his march through South and North Carolina, reserving most of the destruction in the Carolinas for South Carolina, since that state was the first state to secede from the Union. Sherman had acknowledged that "War is cruelty," but he felt that cruelty was a necessary component of winning the war. British historian B.H. Liddell Hart called Sherman "the first modern general," citing Sherman's use of "maneuver warfare" which emphasized indirect attacks with surprise and shock. The carte de visite was a phenomenon, a quickly spreading collecting hobby that began in the late 1850s and 1860s, which was termed "cardomania." The carte de visite was an albumin print on thin paper glued to a thick paper card. Persons in Europe and then America collected and traded these cards, which were of friends and relatives as well as celebrities. The carte de visite (French for "visiting card") originated in France. The offered card measures 4.1x6.5", and the display, matted and framed, measures 12.9x10.6". The card is beautifully signed by Sherman, with black ink from a fountain pen, using his "General" title and dated "1886" in his inscription. The signed and inscribed carte de visite makes a great memento of one of the most famous generals in history. The carte de visite display comes with a PSA LOA.
