1887 Bela Pratt Statue (Parian) Of Amos Alonzo Stagg
Can you make out the faint Yale “Y” on the uniform chest of this sports immortal? Nearly 120 years old, this Parian (white biscuit porcelain process) statue of Amos Alonzo Stagg was done by Bela Pratt (1867-1917). Pratt is best known for his sculptures, some of which are displayed at Harvard, Yale and the Boston Public Library, as well as in the collections of many museums. He was a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, creator of both the “Saint-Gaudens double-eagle” U$20 gold piece and “Saint-Gaudens eagle” U$10 gold piece. Pratt was attending Yale and executed this piece when he was 20 years old. Stagg was the assistant baseball coach at Yale at the time and modeled for Pratt. The statue is 19” tall and has had some very minor restoration and is EX-MT. This piece was also made by famous by a period Carte-de-Visite of the figure.
