1887 N28 John Clarkson PSA 7 NM
One of the 19th century's greatest pitchers, John Clarkson gets the legend's treatment in Allen & Ginter's you-are-there lithograph trading card from its famous 1887 (N28) edition. It's often called "The World Champions" set. Just 10 baseballers made the artists' cut, along with fighters, wrestlers, Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley. The colors remain vibrant on 1 1/2 x 2 3/4" hefty stock with the roster of other cards on the back. One came in a pack of 10 cigarettes in 1887, and if you got a Clarkson you were jazzed. Clarkson had a record of 328-178, once winning 53 games in a season. In the year following this card's release, he won only 33 games for Boston in the National League, and probably had to take a pay cut! The card grades a solid Near Mint.
