Ty Cobb L1 Leather NRMT
One of the finest L1 Leathers known to exist if not "the" finest. Stunningly rare and in unspeakably near perfect condition is this 1912 Ty Cobb model. These large leather hides with baseball players imprinted on their fronts were issued as premiums by Helmar Tobacco Company with their Turkish Trophies brand. They are a closely related cousin, using the same images as the 1912 Turkey Red's and the 1912 S1 Silks. The set included the cream of the crop of big leaguers, including Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, & greatest of them all, the first man elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame: Ty Cobb. The Cobb leather is embellished with the image of the Georgia Peach standing ramrod straight with spiked-shoed feet close together, clad in his Tiger uniform and cap, his magical bat gripped tightly and resting on his left shoulder, his shadow trailing behind him toward a grassy area to the rear. Under this image is an illustration of a thin plaque reading "Cobb Detroit". At the bottom center, on one edge of seven geometrically-cut edges is the number "127". The light brown leather is strop-tough yet amazingly supple, buttery soft and looks as if it came straight from the cow's hide this morning. Only the back shows any evident flaws, with a few black speckles (not even worth mentioning); the front is near pristine, leaving Cobb as if in a pastoral spotlight. The leather measures 11" from top to bottom center, 9 1/2" at its widest across the top, 8 1/2 across the bottom-most outer edges. Nothing short of museum worthy, preserved with the care it duly deserves.
