1888 Buchner Gold Coins Tin Adertising Sign for Baseball Cards

1888 Buchner Gold Coins Tin Adertising Sign for Baseball Cards

This is the only tin advertising sign related to baseball cards known to exist, as all others are either paper or cardboard. A thrilling discovery of a museum quality piece, this dates from 1887, when modern baseball was still in its infancy and being developed as a spectator sport. The 1887 N284 Buchner Gold Coin baseball card set was produced by D. Buchner & Company of New York and distributed with Gold Coin chewing tobacco. This is an extraordinary historic piece; "Attention: All Cards Packed in One of the Finest Tobacco...All Cards Redeemed At Our Office." Redeemed for 75 Cards for 250, you could get a Plush Photograph Album or 1000 Gilt Framed Picture Landing of Columbus." The sign advertises the Buchner Gold Coin Set, and features and early image of a policeman with baton. At the top reads "Smoke or Chew." Metal sign measures 10x14" and has some rust throughout, dings, wear, bends and creases, but presents well as a function of its rarity and age. Interestingly, it relates to both baseball and non-sports cards.
