Goudey and Playball Baseball Lot (400+ cards)
A fantastic lot for Goudey and Playball collectors with 122 different 1933-34 Goudey cards averaging P-VG, 149 (including 140 different) 1939 Playball cards averaging G-EX, 94 different 1940 Playball averaging G-EX, and 57 different 1941 Playball averaging VG to EX+. All years include a plethora of stars and Hall of Famers. This lot features all of the Playball Ted Williams cards and many other all-time greats. The Ted Williams cards include TWO #92 1939 Playball issues, one in EX condition with 60/40 left to right centering and even corner wear, and the other in EX+ condition with virtually perfect centering and mild corner wear. Both cards feature extremely sharp images, stellar registration, and fantastic eye appeal. The #27 1940 Playball is a very solid EX-MT to NRMT card with great centering, a sharp image and registration, and stain and crease free obverse and reverse. The #14 1941 Playball grades a solid EX and features a vivid image with a little color bleed, with perfect left to right centering and 40/60 top to bottom centering. Both the obverse and reverse are stain and crease free! Lot also features a 1939 Playball #26 Joe DiMaggio in EX condition. This card is centered better than 55/45 all around and demonstrates a candid image of the Yankee Clipper from the heyday of his career. A pair of key 1933 Goudey’s #149 Babe Ruth (VG) and #220 Lefty Grove (VG) are included. Several other key Goudeys are in P to VG condition and include Benny Bengough (#1 card), Jimmy Foxx, Eddie Collins, Mel Ott, Gabby Hartnett, Dizzy Dean, and Carl Hubbell. Also included in the 1939 Playball group is a #56 Hank Greenberg (EX) with fantastic centering and a striking image of this Tigers great. A few of the keys from the 1940 Playball are #6 Left Grove (EX), #30 Moe Berg (EX), #40 Hank Greenberg (EX), #88 Mel Ott (VG-EX), and #120 Walter Johnson (EX). From the 1941 Playball lot, there are EX examples of Mel Ott, Jimmie Fox, and Hank Greenberg. All in all, this is a fantastic lot for the collector looking to begin these sets, or for the dealer looking for some quality store or show inventory. Several of these cards could bring substantial returns if/when professionally graded. Don’t skip over this one!
